Study Resources FAQs
- Why do I see the same title listed three times in a row?
Each title represents one listing for a book, video, software title, etc. Sometimes, two different locations each have a copy of the same item (ie. one copy of the book at the Learning Resources Center, and another copy at Hurlburt). Sometimes, there are different editions of the same book available, and each book has its own listing. Sometimes, two different books will share the same title.
- What's the deal with this copyright stuff?
When a college purchases a piece of software, they buy the right to use that software only on a certain number of machines. When a college purchases a video or audio tape, they generally have to agree to not copy the tape. Unauthorized copying of tape or software is illegal, and can can lead to heavy fines for an organization or even time in prison for people who flagrantly violate copyright law. It is in the best interest of everyone to respect any copyright restrictions on a given disc or tape.
- Why can I only check this book out for one week? I need it for a longer period of time.
Each library and lab sets its own policy about how materials circulate. If you have questions, contact the lab director or librarian directly.
- Are there other books, videos, or software that might help me?
Every student has different educational needs, and there are many people on campus who want to help you succeed. The Academic Success Center, Learning Resources Center, Math Laboratories, and the Learning Skills and Writing Laboratory are just a few places you can go for additional help.
- I really like the software in the math lab. Can I make a copy of it and use it at home?
Almost always, the answer is no. The college has what is called a site license for most software, which is contract between OWC and the software company that says the college has purchased the right to run the software on a certain number of computers on the campus. Making a copy of it for home use is regard as software piracy, and is illegal.
